Intel’s “0x114” Microcode Update Makes Things Worse for Arrow Lake CPUs

Intel’s desktop processor division faces mounting challenges as performance issues plague its “Raptor Lake Refresh” and Arrow Lake-S (ARL-S) lineups.

The company’s recent struggles began with thermal instability in the Raptor Lake series, but there’s a more pressing concern with their latest processor family. The tech giant acknowledged a significant disparity between consumer-reported performance and their internal testing of ARL-S processors.

In response, Intel released a new microcode update, designated “0x114,” to address multiple core issues identified in their “Field Update.” However, early testing suggests these fixes may have fallen short of their intended goal.

Prominent hardware testing authority @CapFrameX has revealed troubling new data: the Core Ultra 9 285K, running the latest 0x114 microcode, continues to exhibit serious performance degradation. In Cyberpunk 2077 benchmarks, the processor showed an alarming 18% decrease in average FPS.

This finding completely contradicts Intel’s promises of “double-digit” performance improvements with the new BIOS update, leaving many customers questioning the effectiveness of the proposed solutions.

Adding to Intel’s mounting concerns, the same benchmark testing reveals a troubling 14% increase in memory latency. These findings, considered among the most credible analyses of the latest microcode update, paint an increasingly concerning picture of the processor’s performance issues.

Looking ahead, Intel has scheduled a media briefing coinciding with CES 2025 to address the ongoing Core Ultra 200S performance challenges. This upcoming event may prove crucial in determining the future trajectory of the Arrow Lake-S (ARL-S) series.

Intel has yet to confirm whether the recently surfaced benchmarks, showing significant performance degradation with the 0x114 microcode, are consistent across all systems. Buyers will need to await official word from the tech giant before drawing any conclusions.
