Rawalpindi Transporters Raise Fares Amid Passenger Outcry

Transporters in Rawalpindi have increased fares on all local routes by Rs. 5 to Rs. 10, despite only a slight rise in petroleum prices. This move has sparked disputes between passengers and conductors, with commuters expressing frustration over the unjustified hikes. Many have pointed out that transporters did not reduce fares in the past when petrol and diesel prices dropped significantly.

The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) and traffic police have responded to passenger complaints by fining 14 vehicles violating fare regulations. The Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner (DC) has also criticized the fare hike, stressing that there is no valid reason for transporters to charge more. He added that strict measures will be taken against those who continue to overcharge passengers or fail to comply with transport rules.

For passengers already grappling with inflation and financial challenges, the fare hike has only added to their burdens. Many have called for greater transparency and stricter regulation in fare adjustments to protect commuters from being exploited by transport operators. Authorities have assured immediate action to address the issue and maintain fairness in the transport sector.
