Pakistan’s opening batter Saim Ayub was forced off the field after suffering a painful ankle injury during the opening session of day one in the second Test against South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town. The injury occurred less than an hour into the match, leaving Pakistan’s batting lineup shaken in a must-win contest to avoid a series defeat.
The Incident
The injury occurred during the seventh over when Ryan Rickelton edged a delivery from Mohammad Abbas through the slip cordon. As two Pakistan fielders, Aamer Jamal and Saim Ayub, chased the ball to the boundary, Jamal managed to slide and pull it in just before it reached the rope. He tossed it up to Saim Ayub, who was backing him up.
However, as Ayub tried to stop and collect the ball, he lost his footing, and his body weight fell awkwardly on his right ankle. The 22-year-old batter tripped backwards and immediately fell to the ground in agony, clutching his leg.

Medical Attention and Exit from the Field
Jamal and Babar Azam rushed to Ayub’s side as he lay on the turf in severe pain. The medical team was quickly on the scene, and after receiving treatment, Ayub was helped off the field. His right ankle was bandaged, and he was carried off on a stretcher.
It remains uncertain when or if Saim Ayub will return to the match, and his injury adds another complication for Pakistan, who are already facing a challenging series.
Ayub’s Form and Impact on the Series
Saim Ayub has been one of Pakistan’s standout performers in the white-ball leg of the South Africa tour. In the T20I series, he scored 31 and an unbeaten 98*, while in the ODIs, he registered impressive scores of 109, 25, and 101. Despite a modest start in the first Test with scores of 14 and 27, Ayub also picked up a wicket, contributing to Pakistan’s efforts.
The injury leaves Pakistan with a significant gap in their top order, as Ayub’s potential for building partnerships and stability in the opening positions has been one of the team’s key strengths on this tour. With the series hanging in the balance, Pakistan’s ability to adapt and recover from Ayub’s absence will be crucial.
As the game progresses, all eyes will be on the Pakistan team’s ability to cope with this injury setback and still maintain their focus on securing a vital win.
