Novak Djokovic, one of tennis’ all-time greats and a 24-time Grand Slam champion, has made a startling claim about his 2022 Australian Open visa debacle. In an interview with GQ, Djokovic alleged he was “poisoned” by the food he consumed while detained in Melbourne, shedding new light on a saga that captivated the sporting world.
Visa Drama and Detention: A Look Back
The Serbian star, known for his meticulous approach to diet and health, was embroiled in a high-profile dispute over Australia’s COVID-19 entry rules due to his unvaccinated status. His visa was canceled ahead of the tournament, leading to his detention in a Melbourne hotel also housing asylum seekers.
“I realized that in that hotel in Melbourne, I was fed with some food that poisoned me,” Novak Djokovic revealed. He further stated that upon returning to Serbia, tests uncovered alarmingly high levels of heavy metals, including lead and mercury, in his system.

Novak Djokovic, who had not previously spoken publicly about these findings, described the incident during the Australian Open as deeply unsettling. “I had some discoveries when I came back to Serbia,” he explained. “I never told this to anybody publicly, but I had a really high level of heavy metal—lead, very high levels of lead and mercury.”
Australia’s Department of Home Affairs declined to comment on the matter, citing privacy regulations.
