The Malir Expressway, a key infrastructure project intended to connect Qayyumabad to Motorway M9 along the Malir River, was recently inaugurated despite being incomplete. This decision has raised significant safety concerns and drawn criticism.
The expressway remains under construction, with several sections still requiring extensive work. Observations reveal scattered construction materials, active machinery, and workers continuing their tasks on-site. Despite the ongoing work, the expressway has been opened for public use, creating a hazardous environment for commuters.
Motorcyclists, in particular, have been frequent users of the expressway, often disregarding safety regulations such as helmet requirements and speed limits. The absence of traffic police or regulatory officials has exacerbated these issues, leaving violations unchecked.
Alarmingly, no provisions have been made to restrict pedestrian access or prevent crossings, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Instances of individuals loitering, crossing the expressway dangerously, and even gathering on the central divider have been reported.
Key components of the expressway, such as interchanges at Qayyumabad and Korangi Causeway, remain incomplete. Exit points are accessible, allowing vehicles to enter the expressway in the wrong direction, creating confusion and potential safety hazards.
Additionally, a lack of directional signage and guidance boards has left drivers uncertain about permissible routes and vehicle types. The absence of traffic control measures, such as speed monitoring or on-site personnel, has compounded the risks.
According to DIG Traffic Ahmed Nawaz Cheema, the expressway was inaugurated recently, and temporary traffic police arrangements have been made. He clarified that permanent traffic police deployment will be established in the coming days.
A spokesperson for the Sindh Chief Minister emphasized that security and operational arrangements are being finalized. Plans for 24/7 patrolling and deployment of Rescue 1122 units on the expressway have been announced to address emergencies and enhance safety measures.
