Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek announced a temporary suspension of new user registrations following a significant cyberattack on its services. The company assured that existing users could continue to log in without issues and expressed gratitude for users’ understanding and support.
DeepSeek, founded in late 2023 by hedge fund manager Liang Wenfeng, has rapidly emerged as a notable player in the AI sector. The company has developed advanced AI models, such as DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1, which rival leading models globally while being more cost-effective. For instance, training DeepSeek-V3 required approximately $6 million worth of computing power, utilizing Nvidia’s H800 chips. This efficiency has propelled DeepSeek’s AI Assistant to surpass ChatGPT in popularity on the U.S. App Store.
The recent cyberattack led to service disruptions, including login failures and temporary outages. As of 20:55 UTC+8 on January 27, the chat service had been restored, though account services continued to experience issues, preventing some users from logging in or signing up.
DeepSeek’s rapid ascent has also influenced global markets. The company’s advancements have prompted a reassessment of the U.S. dominance in AI and the effectiveness of export controls on AI chips. Following DeepSeek’s recent achievements, major U.S. tech firms, including Nvidia, Microsoft, and Alphabet, experienced significant declines in market value, wiping off nearly $1.2 trillion from the stock market.
The company said it continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as they become available.
