Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has come to the defense of Pakistan’s hard-hitting wicketkeeper-batter Azam Khan, urging critics to focus on his match-winning performances rather than his fitness.
Speaking on an Indian media platform, Sehwag acknowledged Azam’s talent, particularly his impact in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), and emphasized that while improved fitness would benefit the player, it should not overshadow his ability to perform under pressure.
“I don’t think we should criticize him too much for his body and fitness. Azam Khan is talented and has proven that many times in the PSL. If he improves his fitness, it will be better for him. However, I judge a player by his ability to perform and win matches for his team,” Sehwag stated.
The former opener further elaborated on his philosophy regarding fitness in cricket, asserting that a player’s ability to win games should be the primary metric for evaluation. “If he can win me games, then his fitness can be as per his wish. It is more important for a player to be game-fit rather than having six-pack abs but zero performance,” he added.
The remarks come at a time when Azam Khan has faced scrutiny over his fitness levels, particularly following underwhelming performances in international cricket attributed to his weight. Despite his powerful hitting and explosive style in T20 leagues, concerns about his agility and endurance have persisted, keeping him away from Pakistan’s international setup despite the country’s limited pool of power-hitters.
Azam Khan’s fitness has been a frequent talking point in Pakistan cricket, with selectors and analysts often debating whether he meets the international standards required for a long-term role in the national squad.
Sehwag’s backing highlights a broader discussion in cricket—whether fitness should take precedence over raw cricketing ability. With the game transitioning to shorter and faster formats, perhaps it is time to reassess this topic.
As Pakistan continues its search for limited-overs talent, Azam Khan may yet don the green jersey once again.
