Pakistan women’s football team is set to miss out on gaining international experience once again, with reports confirming that the team will not take part in the upcoming AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers.
Thirty-seven nations have confirmed their participation in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers, but Pakistan’s absence from the competition underscores the ongoing challenges facing women’s football in the country.
A total of 33 teams will battle for eight remaining spots in the tournament, joining hosts Australia and the top three teams from the 2022 edition—defending champions China PR, runners-up South Korea, and third-placed Japan. The qualifiers are set to take place from June 23 to July 5, 2025, in a centralized format, with venues and draw mechanics to be announced later.
Participating nations include India, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Bangladesh, among others, highlighting a strong regional representation. However, Pakistan’s absence is a major talking point, particularly as the country continues to struggle with administrative instability and a lack of structured support for its women’s football program.
The Pakistan women’s national team has seen sporadic international participation in recent years, often facing issues related to funding, governance, and infrastructure. Despite some encouraging performances in the recent SAFF Women’s Championships, the team has been unable to establish a consistent presence on the continental stage.
The AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers would have provided a crucial platform for the team to gain experience against Asia’s elite. However, without a place in the qualifiers, Pakistan’s path to top-tier international football remains uncertain.
Despite Pakistan’s absence, the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 is set to be a landmark tournament, featuring 12 teams—an increase from the previous format of eight. The competition will be hosted in Sydney, Perth, and Gold Coast, utilizing world-class venues such as Stadium Australia, which hosted the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 final.
