Pakistan’s Champions Trophy preparations suffered a major blow as fast bowler Haris Rauf walked off the field with a side strain during the tri-series clash against New Zealand in Lahore. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) later confirmed that Rauf experienced “sharp pain in the left side of the chest and abdominal muscles,” with medical assessments diagnosing it as a low-grade side strain. The PCB has not provided any further updates on the matter.
With the Champions Trophy set to begin in just a few days, Haris’ injury could prove costly for Pakistan, as he has largely carried the team’s pace attack in recent months with sublime performances.
Haris Rauf’s injury comes at a time when Pakistan is heavily relying on its fast-bowling attack to make an impact on home soil. With the team’s fragile batting lineup still struggling—as evident in the first match of the tri-series—his absence, even for a few games, could leave a significant void. Without his ability to bowl at express pace and deliver in the death overs, Pakistan may struggle to contain opposition batters, particularly on batting-friendly surfaces.
The PCB has yet to release a detailed update on his recovery timeline, but if the injury worsens, Pakistan might be forced to explore backup options.
The match also saw a scary moment for New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra, who suffered a forehead laceration after misjudging a high catch under the floodlights. Blood streamed down his face as medical staff rushed in, and New Zealand Cricket later confirmed that Ravindra underwent a Head Injury Assessment (HIA) and would be monitored further. While his injury appears less serious than Rauf’s, it adds to New Zealand’s growing concerns ahead of the Champions Trophy, with fast bowler Lockie Ferguson already doubtful due to a hamstring injury sustained in the ILT20.
Pakistan will face South Africa on Wednesday in their final tri-series match before their Champions Trophy opener against New Zealand on February 19 in Karachi. Meanwhile, New Zealand will play South Africa on Monday in their next tri-series clash. With crucial games ahead, Haris Rauf’s fitness remains the top concern for Pakistan, as they look to ensure their strike bowler is ready for the high-stakes tournament.
