Starting today, Apple is expanding the availability of its Apple TV app beyond smart TVs running Android TV or Google TV. For the first time, users can install the app on Android smartphones and tablets, as long as the devices run Android 10 or later.
This move shows a long-overdue expansion, considering Apple TV+ launched five years ago. Until now, Android users could only access Apple TV+ content via a web browser, while the app remained exclusive to Apple devices and select smart TVs.
With this rollout, Android users can now stream Apple TV+ shows, movies, and MLS Season Pass on their mobile devices. The MLS Season Pass is an optional add-on for soccer fans, priced at $12.99 per month or $79 per season, while Apple TV+ itself costs $9.99 per month. Apple has integrated Friday Night Baseball live broadcasts into the new app experience.
Users can sign in with an existing Apple ID or create a new account directly in the app. However, one key limitation remains—Android users won’t be able to access the in-app store to rent or purchase movies and shows.
While this update is welcome, it’s surprising that it took Apple five years to release a proper Apple TV app for Android mobile devices. The company has historically been slow to bring its services to competing platforms, and even now, it’s unclear whether the rollout is global or region-restricted. For instance, in Europe, the app still appears to be limited to smart TVs.
Nonetheless, for Android users who subscribe to Apple TV+, this release finally offers a more seamless viewing experience—one that arguably should have arrived much sooner.
