NED Students Working to Launch Pakistan’s First Self-Driving Car Within 6 Months

Students from Karachi have started working on the development of a driverless car using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. This project is being led by the National Center for Artificial Intelligence at NED University of Engineering and Technology.

According to the engineers involved, this is the first-ever AI-powered driverless car project in Pakistan. No other institution in the country is currently working on a similar initiative. The team at NED University aims to test the driverless car on roads within six months.

To develop the vehicle, a special electronic car has been imported from China. The car is now being modified with advanced AI tools to convert it into a fully autonomous vehicle. Engineers are working on various AI-driven features, such as speed limit detection, object detection, and lane recognition.

The project director, Associate Professor Dr. Muhammad Khurram, shared that the team has already made significant progress in data control and software development. He is confident that in six months, they will be able to conduct the first test drive on NED University’s roads.

Two research students, Inzamam and Aleema, who are actively working on the project, explained that robotics technology is also being integrated along with AI. The mapping process has been completed, and they have successfully achieved object detection and lane recognition using AI algorithms. Currently, the team is focusing on traffic signal recognition and steering control.

  • یہ ساری ایجادات پھر جاتی کہاں ہیں۔ کتنا کچھ ایجاد ہوتا ہے، پھر گرد میں گم ہو جاتا ہے۔

  • even the professors are sleeping, they didn’t bother telling students to concentrate on solving problems endemic to Pakistan.

  • And where are we supposed to drive? Is the whole Drigh Road a massive traffic jam? Seriously, this is a failure and causing heavy accidents.

  • This is a good initiative. Until and unless our universities don’t involved in industry based research and development, our country can’t improve economy.
