A fact-finding committee formed by the Sindh Assembly has recommended awarding grace marks to first-year students who failed the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) exams.
The proposal suggests granting 15% to 20% additional marks to help students pass. In its report to Education Minister Sardar Ali Shah, the committee analyzed exam results, the evaluation process, and the overall academic performance of BIEK and affiliated colleges.
It also called for a review of results from other education boards in Sindh. A final decision will be made by the relevant assembly committee, which could impact students appearing for the annual exams starting April 15.
The committee, led by NED University VC Dr. Sarosh Lodhi, investigated the unusually low pass rate, which was below 30%. During the probe, exam copies of failing students—including those with top Matriculation grades—were reviewed.
Some basic errors were found, including spelling mistakes. The report highlighted issues in mark totaling, tabulation, and data entry.
It proposed grace marks for subjects like Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry but did not recommend them for Zoology, Botany, Islamic Studies, or Pakistan Studies.
