The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has kicked off spectacularly, with New Zealand’s batters putting on a show in the opening game against hosts Pakistan at the National Stadium in Karachi.
The first innings of the tournament has already set the stage for what looks to be a high-scoring event, as the Kiwis look set to post a commanding total, thanks to two brilliant centuries by Will Young and Tom Latham.
New Zealand’s opener Will Young was the first to light up the scoreboard, anchoring the innings with a composed yet aggressive knock of 107 off 113 balls. Young’s innings was a masterclass in timing and placement.
After Young’s dismissal, it was New Zealand’s keeper Tom Latham who took charge, continuing the momentum with a brilliant 100 off 95 balls. Latham’s innings was a blend of elegance and aggression, as he expertly maneuvered the field and kept the scoreboard ticking.
With two centuries in the first innings of the tournament, New Zealand has sent a clear message to the other teams: this Champions Trophy is going to be a run-fest. The Kiwis are well on their way to posting a total in excess of 300, a daunting target for any team, especially in the opening game of a high-stakes tournament.
For Pakistan, the bowling attack struggled to find its rhythm on a flat Karachi pitch that offered little assistance to the bowlers.
Will Pakistan rise to the challenge, or will New Zealand’s bowlers seal the deal? The chase is well and truly on.
