Suresh Raina and Michael Clarke’s Champions Trophy Prediction Makes No Sense

With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 set to kick off in just a few hours, cricket experts have begun making their predictions for the tournament’s semi-finalists. However, a surprising selection from former India batter Suresh Raina has stirred debate among fans, challenging the notion that cricket pundits are the end-all and be-all when it comes to cricketing nous.

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen joined Raina in sharing their semi-final predictions for the Champions Trophy. Pietersen opted for Pakistan, India, England, and Australia to advance to the final four. Meanwhile, Raina’s choices raised eyebrows as he backed India, Australia, South Africa, and Afghanistan to make the semis. The issue? Three of the four teams he selected—Australia, South Africa, and Afghanistan—are all part of Group B, making it mathematically impossible for them to qualify together.

Suresh Raina’s gaffe follows a similar misstep by Australian Michael Clarke earlier. Clarke chose Australia, India, Pakistan, and New Zealand as his picks, but the latter trio is all part of Group A, making it impossible for all three to progress to the next round.

The Champions Trophy follows a straightforward structure, with eight teams divided into two groups. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals:

Group A Group B
Pakistan Australia
India England
New Zealand South Africa
Bangladesh Afghanistan

With only two teams progressing from each group, Raina and Clarke’s selections have been deemed unrealistic, as at least one of their picks would inevitably be eliminated before the knockout stage.

As the time for pre-tournament predictions quickly comes to an end, the studios will give way to on-field action as the world’s top teams gear up for battle. The Champions Trophy 2025 promises high-intensity action—and, as early predictions have shown, plenty of debate along the way.
