AI-powered coding startup Codeium is raising a new round of funding, pushing its valuation to $2.85 billion, according to sources familiar with the deal. Kleiner Perkins, a returning investor, is leading the round.
This fresh funding comes just six months after Codeium closed a $150 million Series C, which had valued the company at $1.25 billion post-money. Although the exact amount of the new funding remains unclear, the increase in valuation is a clear sign of strong investor confidence.
Rapid Growth and Market Position
Codeium has reportedly reached $40 million in annualized recurring revenue (ARR), resulting in an impressive valuation multiple of 70 times ARR—far higher than other AI coding startups. By comparison, Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, recently raised funding at a $2.5 billion valuation. However, its multiple was just 25 times ARR based on its reported $100 million revenue.
With the AI coding assistant market is becoming increasingly competitive, Codeium is positioning itself alongside major players like Anysphere, Poolside, Magic, and Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot. Despite the crowded space, Codeium’s ability to secure such a high valuation suggests it is seen as a strong contender in the industry.
Enterprise-Focused
Unlike many of its competitors that mainly target individual developers, Codeium has chosen to focus on enterprise customers. Last summer, the company revealed that over 1,000 businesses, including Anduril, Zillow, and Dell, were actively using its free-tier services.
To further strengthen its offerings, Codeium introduced Windsurf Editor in November—a tool that incorporates agentic AI, allowing for automated code generation with minimal human input. This move aligns with industry trends, as similar “agent mode” features are also available on platforms like Cursor.
Founded in 2021 by Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen, Codeium has quickly gained traction in the AI coding space. Both founders bring extensive experience, with Mohan previously leading infrastructure teams at Nuro and Chen working at Meta, where he helped develop VR tools for Oculus Quest.
