The Punjab government has launched its first electric bus service, “Electro,” in Lahore to improve public transport and provide affordable travel for citizens. This initiative aims to connect far-off areas to the city center. The project includes 27 electric buses with 98 bus stops under development.
The buses will travel from Lahore Railway Station to Green Town, covering important locations across the city. The route passes through major business, educational, and residential areas.
The journey begins from Haji Camp and Police Lines, moving towards the Shimla Pahari, Governor House, and Bagh-e-Jinnah. These are some of the busiest spots in the city. The route also includes Lahore Zoo, Charing Cross, and Ganga Ram Hospital, benefiting students, office workers, and hospital visitors.
As the bus moves further, it passes through Waris Road, Abid Market, Mozang, and Ichhra. The service extends to Punjab College, Punjab University (Gate No. 4), Hailey College, IBA Stop, Shah Di Khoi, Ravi Chowk, and Akbar Chowk.
The final stretch of the route takes the buses through Township Bazaar, Model Road, Honda Mor, the Government Employees Society, Pindi Stop, and Riphah University. The service concludes at Minhaj University.
The fare for the service is set at Rs. 20, making it economical. Additionally, the government has made travel free for students and physically disabled individuals. Each bus is equipped with free Wi-Fi, mobile charging ports, and CCTV cameras, providing convenience and safety to passengers.
500 more electric buses will soon be introduced, and the service will extend to Faisalabad and Gujranwala. Additionally, the province’s first tram service is set to launch, running from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has also directed officials to explore the possibility of an underground transport system for Lahore.
