Punjab to Transform 170 Historic Sites into International Tourist Attractions

The Punjab government has decided to establish the Punjab Tourism and Heritage Authority, aiming to restore 170 historic sites across the province.

The initiative seeks to transform these locations, including temples, mosques, and gurdwaras, into major tourist attractions of international standards.

An official summary for the creation of the authority has been submitted for cabinet approval. Once approved, the body will be responsible for managing all historical, cultural, and tourism-related institutions in Punjab.

The restoration plan includes 101 gurdwaras, 53 churches, and several other landmarks, ensuring their preservation and accessibility for visitors.

To support the initiative, the Punjab Tourism and Heritage Authority Act 2024 has been enacted, alongside a new tourism policy. The restoration work is scheduled to begin in June, with a phased approach to ensure timely completion.

As part of the project, the government has proposed the development of Bansra Gali as a tourist village, construction of 16 parks, and the transformation of Changa Manga into a modern leisure resort.

Additionally, Taxila is set to be developed into an international tourist city, featuring new temples and galleries dedicated to Siddhartha for Buddhist visitors. For Sikh pilgrims, 46 inactive gurdwaras will be fully restored. To improve accessibility, high-quality roads, upgraded infrastructure, and modern facilities will be introduced.
