Salman Butt Refers to Pakistan Coaches as Decoration Pieces

Pakistan cricket’s coaching carousel has once again come under fire, with former captain Salman Butt calling out the instability surrounding the national team’s coaching appointments.

Butt, known for his outspoken views on Pakistan’s cricketing matters, described the frequent changes in the coaching staff as akin to having “decoration pieces” in the dressing room, indicating that they serve no real purpose in fostering long-term success.

Salman Butt made his feelings known during a panel show dissecting Pakistan’s unceremonious exit from the 2025 Champions Trophy. He was not alone in his criticism, as he was joined by Hasan Ali and Fawad Alam, who shared similar sentiments.

Butt’s comments come at a time when the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) likely finds itself in yet another period of transition. The national team has seen a revolving door of coaches in recent months, with names like Jason Gillespie and Gary Kirsten leaving their roles after only a few months. The lack of continuity has raised concerns over the development of the team, with critics, including Salman Butt, arguing that the constant changes have created a sense of instability within the squad.

“Pakistan has changed coaches so much that it’s like having decoration pieces,” Butt said. “There’s no consistency; no one can change something in a matter of days,” he added.

Gary Kirsten, who was tasked with turning around Pakistan’s flailing fortunes in limited-overs cricket, left his post without taking charge of a single ODI. Similarly, Jason Gillespie, Pakistan’s then-test coach, failed to see out his term or take the reins in Kirsten’s stead. Both exits left the team searching for stability, with Aaqib Javed stepping in, albeit temporarily.

Aaqib, who was appointed as Pakistan’s head coach in a temporary capacity, too faces an uncertain future. Reports suggest that despite his efforts, his tenure might be cut short as the PCB reportedly looks to make changes once again after the Champions Trophy, proving Salman Butt right once again. This continuing cycle of coaching changes has not only raised questions about the leadership’s strategy but has also left many players and fans frustrated with the lack of a clear, long-term vision.

As the debate rages on, Salman Butt’s remarks highlight the growing frustration with Pakistan’s cricketing hierarchy and the urgent need for long-term planning and consistency if the team is to rise to its full potential. Butt’s insights serve as a reminder that without stability in coaching, the national team may struggle to achieve its goals.
