England Captain Hints at Stepping Down After Champions Trophy Exit

England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler has hinted at relinquishing his leadership role following his team’s disappointing group-stage exit from the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025.

England’s campaign came to an abrupt end after back-to-back defeats against Australia and Afghanistan, making them the first team from Group B to crash out of the eight-team tournament.

Speaking at the post-match presentation after England’s loss to Afghanistan, Buttler expressed his disappointment and hinted at a possible change in leadership. Buttler said,

I don’t want to say any emotional statements right now. But I think for myself and the other guys at the top, we should consider all possibilities.

Buttler, who led England to T20 World Cup glory in 2022, has now overseen three major tournament exits as captain, raising questions about his leadership in high-pressure situations.

Reflecting on the match against Afghanistan, Buttler admitted that his team had their chances but failed to capitalize. He credited Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran for his match-winning knock of 177 runs, which propelled Afghanistan to a formidable total of 325/7.

“It’s really disappointing. I thought we had our chances in the game. Another fantastic game of cricket, but disappointing to come out on the wrong side,” Buttler said.

He further added: “They got away from us there in the last 10 overs. Credit to Ibrahim, he played a fantastic innings. If we look back and reflect, 113 off the last 10 pushed them up to a score that was a very good score on that pitch.”

While Jos Buttler has not made any definitive statements about stepping down, his remarks indicate that he is open to discussions about his future as captain. With England’s next major assignment being the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will need to decide whether to continue with Buttler at the helm or explore new leadership options.
