South Africa’s top-order batter Rassie van der Dussen has hinted that the ongoing Men’s Champions Trophy could be his final ICC tournament. Speaking in Karachi ahead of South Africa’s last group-stage match against England, van der Dussen acknowledged the possibility of calling time on his international career, though he emphasized it wasn’t a preconceived decision.
“It’s definitely a possibility that it’s my last ICC tournament,” van der Dussen said. “I’m not saying that with any preconceived ideas that I’ll call time on it, or management will call time on my career. It’s just the reality.”
Van der Dussen, South Africa’s most regular No. 3 since 2019, has seen his form dip recently. Before his half-century against Afghanistan, he had gone ten innings without a fifty and 13 without a century. With Heinrich Klaasen returning to full fitness, van der Dussen’s place in the XI could come under scrutiny if South Africa opts to retain Bavuma, de Zorzi, and Rickelton.
Reflecting on his future, van der Dussen said his national contract, which expires in April, will play a key role in his decision. “I’ll have discussions with Rob [Walter] and Enoch [Nkwe] to see where they see me. If I’m still good enough in two years, I’d like to think I’m in the mix. If not, that’s fine too.”
Unlike some players who prioritize league cricket, van der Dussen remains committed to the Proteas. “Representing my country has always been my ultimate goal. Leagues are nice, but that’s not my be-all and end-all.”
As South Africa prepares to face England, Rassie van der Dussen remains focused on helping his team progress, knowing this tournament could mark the end of his international journey.
