Google Brings Gemini 2.0 Powered AI Mode to Web Search

Google has announced that AI Overviews are now powered by Gemini 2.0 in the US, promising faster and higher-quality responses for complex queries, including coding, advanced math, and multimodal searches. The company claims that over a billion people are “using” AI Overviews, though this is due to its automatic integration into search rather than voluntary adoption.

AI Overviews Expansion

Previously, users could avoid AI Overviews by searching while logged out of their Google accounts. However, Google has now expanded AI Overviews to teens and users who are not signed in, effectively removing that workaround. This means more users will be required to interact with AI Overviews, whether they want to or not.

AI Mode: A New Search Experiment

Google is also introducing AI Mode, an opt-in feature available through Search Labs. AI Mode builds on AI Overviews, adding advanced reasoning, comparisons, and multimodal capabilities. This new leftmost search tab allows users to ask detailed questions, follow up on responses, and access “helpful web links”—for now, at least.

AI Mode uses a customized version of Gemini 2.0, with Google positioning it as ideal for questions requiring deeper exploration. However, users may still need multiple searches to verify accuracy, as Google acknowledges potential biases and opinion-based responses.

Future Updates and Testing

Google plans to enhance AI responses with more visuals, videos, and richer formatting. The first users to test AI Mode will be Google One AI Premium subscribers, with broader availability expected later.

While AI integration in search is expanding rapidly, its accuracy, reliability, and objectivity remain ongoing concerns, making real-world testing a critical phase before full deployment.
