The Punjab Home Department has called on philanthropists to help secure the release of impoverished prisoners who have completed their sentences but remain jailed due to unpaid fines or compensation.
Authorities have urged people to contribute their Zakat to cover these dues, enabling the release of prisoners before Eid. According to the department’s spokesperson, around 150 inmates are still behind bars despite serving their sentences, as they owe a collective Rs100 million in fines.
Last year, donations amounting to Rs170 million helped secure the release of 226 prisoners. Officials are hoping for similar generosity this year to reunite more prisoners with their families in time for Eid.
Donors can contribute by depositing funds into the Punjab Prison Foundation’s account. Alternatively, fines can be paid directly to a bank on behalf of a prisoner, with the payment receipt submitted to the respective jail for processing.
Authorities are appealing for urgent contributions to ensure that those who have served their time can return home and celebrate Eid with their loved ones.
