Gemini Will Replace Google Assistant on Androids This Year

Google has announced that it will begin replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on Android phones later this year. The rollout will happen gradually over the coming months, after which Assistant will no longer be available on most mobile devices or listed in app stores.

The company confirmed in a blog post that it won’t limit the transition to smartphones. It also plans to introduce Gemini on tablets, in-car systems, smartwatches, headphones, and other connected devices. Additionally, Google plans to bring a new Gemini-powered experience to home devices such as smart speakers, displays, and TVs.

Until the transition is complete, Google Assistant will continue to work on supported devices. In the meantime, Google has been enhancing Gemini with features that users previously relied on Assistant for. These include playing music, setting timers, and taking actions directly from the lock screen—features that had been among the most requested by Android users.

Pixel 9 Signaled the Shift

The change isn’t unexpected. Earlier this year, Google launched its Pixel 9 series with Gemini set as the default assistant. The company has been positioning Gemini as a more capable replacement, with deeper AI capabilities and features like Gemini Live and Deep Research that aim to offer a more interactive and informative experience.

Google says that Gemini provides a smarter, more flexible way to handle tasks and retrieve information. The platform uses generative AI to support more complex queries and actions, offering users a more advanced digital assistant across all their devices.

While no exact date has been given, the company says it will share more information with users in the coming months.
