Government to Limit Fees for Private Medical and Dental Colleges

The Pakistani government has decided to impose a cap on the fees charged by private medical and dental colleges in an effort to control rising education costs, sources revealed.

According to reports, some institutions charge up to Rs. 3.5 million per year, making medical education unaffordable for many students. To address this, the government is finalizing a new maximum fee limit, which will be lower than the current rates.

Officials stated that the move aims to prevent uncontrolled fee hikes and ensure that quality education remains accessible. Consultations regarding the fee cap have been completed, and an official announcement is expected soon.

Earlier this year, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) had already placed restrictions on fee collection by private medical and dental colleges. The council had issued notices to institutions, instructing them not to collect fees following recommendations from the Senate’s Health Sub-Committee.

A ban on fee collection was imposed until the Medical Education Committee, led by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, submitted its recommendations. This committee was formed under the Prime Minister’s directive to review the issue and propose a fair fee structure.
