Karachi Kings: Squad Analysis, Preview & Predictions for PSL X

Karachi Kings head into the landmark Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season X after an off-season of much change on and off the field as they look to get back to winning ways after a subdued campaign last year.

Armed with a squad that blends international pedigree with explosive local talent, their campaign may hinge on how well those pieces come together on the big stage.

Here are all the things that could define their season.

David Warner — A Global Star

Karachi was in a win-win situation during the PSL X draft, holding the second pick. They wasted little time in selecting one of the biggest names in cricket, Australian superstar David Warner. The left-hander’s importance for the team was further clarified as he was immediately announced as the team’s next captain.

Warner’s performances, though, could be crucial to their chances of adding their second PSL title. His overall T20 numbers (since 2024) still demand respect — 1,218 runs in 43 innings at a strike rate of 136.7 with nine fifties. But the majority of his runs come within the powerplay overs. If he fails to get going in the early overs, it could spell trouble for the Kings.

David Warner Since 2024

Innings Runs Avg SR 50s
Overall 43 1218 32.1 136.7 9
Powerplay 43 716 32.5 137.2 0

Middle-Order Conundrum

While David Warner is guaranteed to open the innings for his side, along with Kiwi wicket-keeper Tim Siefert, who has been in excpetional run of form. James Vince will slot in nicely at one down as well, despite his recent struggles in Asia.

James Vince Since 2024

Innings Runs Avg SR 50s
Overall 63 1903 32.8 130.4 13
In Asia 32 831 27.7 124.6 6

The issue arises as they fill out rest of the middle-order. The number of options are limited as both Shan Masood and Omair bin Yousuf are primiraly top order players.

Shan Masood, the former captain, has also seen a dip in his numbers since 2023. He is a credible option if Karachi is looking for an anchor up top, but if they decide to go all-out, Shan’s opportunities within the playing XI may be limited.

Shan Masood in PSL

Innings Runs Avg SR 50s
2019-2022 33 1082 32.8 136.1 7
Since 2023 19 394 20.7 116.2 2

Khushdil Shah — Sixes or Bust

No one in Pakistan currently embodies the chaos of T20 cricket like Khushdil Shah. The former Multan stalwart remains a dangerous late-overs option, particularly with his ability to clear the boundary. Since 2024, he’s averaged a six every 10 balls in T20 leagues — the third-best rate among Asian players after India’s Rajat Patidar and Shivam Dube.

His role as a finisher could be vital in turning par scores into match-winning totals, and his more-than-able bowling could help the team in sticky situations as well.

Bowling Concerns?

While Karachi Kings have a plethora of batting options for PSL X, their pace department does not have the same luxury. Adam Milne gives them a boost, but Mir Hamza is not an express bowler, while Aamar Jamal and Abbas Afridi are considered all-round options rather than genuine pacers, irrespective of their talent.

Abbas Afridi — Karachi’s Trump Card

Despite these concerns, if there is one player who could be a game-changer for Karachi Kings, it’s Abbas Afridi. Since 2024, he’s been one of the most effective bowlers in T20 cricket, picking up 48 wickets in just 100.3 overs at an outstanding strike rate of 12.6 and an average of 18.1.

Capable of bowling in the middle and death overs, his skills with the ball offer plenty of flexibility to the team.

Abbas Afridi Since 2024

Overs Wickets Avg SR Econ.
Overall 100.3 48 18.1 12.6 8.6
Powerplay 20.5 7 22.6 17.9 7.6
Middle Overs 50.3 22 18.5 13.8 8
Death Overs 29.1 19 15.9 9.2 10.4

Adam Milne — Raw Pace, Mixed Returns

New Zealand quick Adam Milne adds some serious pace to Karachi’s attack, but his numbers since 2024 suggest a bowler who has blown hot and cold. He’s taken 29 wickets in 87.4 overs at a strike rate of 18.1, but with an economy of 9.1. His death bowling remains a concern — an economy of 12.2 in the slog overs indicates that Milne will need strong support at the back end of innings to carry the load for his side.

Adam Milne Since 2024

Overs Wickets Avg SR Econ.
Overall 87.4 29 27.4 18.1 9.1
Powerplay 48 14 27.4 20.6 8
Middle Overs 21 8 22.8 15.8 8.7
Death Overs 18.4 7 32.6 16 12.2

Outlook and Predictions

Karachi Kings’ success in PSL X might come down to individual brilliance and how well their international stars adapt to form and conditions. If Warner does Warner things and Vince manages his Asian challenge, the batting could fire.

It’s a squad built for moments — if those moments arrive consistently enough, Karachi could be serious darkhorses for PSL X.

According to our predictions, Karachi are set to qualify for the playoffs for PSL 10.
