US Ends Major Student Exchange Program for Pakistan

The Global Undergraduate Exchange Program for Pakistan (Global UGRAD), a key U.S.-funded academic exchange initiative, has officially come to an end after 15 years of operation.

According to an announcement by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), the U.S. Department of State has informed the organisation that the Global UGRAD-Pakistan Program will no longer be offered.

The news marks the closure of a program that has positively impacted thousands of Pakistani students by offering them the opportunity to study in the United States. The initiative was known for fostering academic advancement, promoting cultural exchange, and supporting leadership development.

USEFP acknowledged that the decision may be disappointing for many students, especially those who applied this year in hopes of joining the program. However, the organisation expressed pride in the transformative experiences the program provided and the lasting contributions made by its participants.

“While this chapter is closing, we encourage you to explore other exchange and scholarship opportunities that may align with your aspirations,” the statement said.

The program, which spanned a decade and a half, became a symbol of educational cooperation between Pakistan and the United States. Its conclusion is seen as the end of a significant era in academic exchange for Pakistani undergraduates.

  • Let’s look forward to other exchange programs that can help bridge cultures and foster educational advancement.
