Sindh Appoints First Christian Deputy Commissioner

In a landmark move towards promoting diversity in Pakistan’s civil service, the Sindh government has appointed Sarah Javed as the province’s first-ever Christian Deputy Commissioner. She will now serve as the Deputy Commissioner of Sanghar, replacing Shehryar Gul, as per an official notification issued this week.

Sarah Javed, an officer of the Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS) from the 2014 CSS batch, brings significant administrative experience to her new role. She has previously served as Assistant Commissioner in several key regions, including Karachi’s Saddar, SITE area, and Hyderabad. Additionally, she held the position of Additional Deputy Commissioner-I in Tharparkar for over a year.

Her contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly as part of Karachi’s District South administration, earned her national recognition and a special award for her dedication and service.

This appointment reflects Sindh’s broader efforts to promote inclusion within government ranks. Earlier this week, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced the recruitment of individuals from marginalised communities — including Kolhi, Bhil, and Meghwar — into the Sindh Police force.

Addressing concerns regarding the safety of minorities, the chief minister shared data on kidnapping cases, stating that out of 310 reported abductions in the 2024-25 period, eight involved members of the Hindu community, with seven already recovered.

Sarah Javed’s elevation stands as a powerful symbol of growing representation and a more inclusive future in Pakistan’s bureaucracy.
