The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved the federal government’s request to reduce the basic tariff for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. This means EV charging stations are about to become cheaper very soon.
The tariff now stands at Rs 23.57 per unit, significantly down from Rs 45.55. This reduction of Rs 21.98 per unit aims to make EV charging more affordable, encouraging more people to adopt EVs in Pakistan.
The federal government requested NEPRA to reduce the tariff and also remove the capped margin of Rs 24.44 for charging stations. NEPRA has decided to leave the margin to the market, allowing greater flexibility for charging station operators. This change encourages competition and is expected to make EV charging more cost-effective.
By lowering charging costs, the government aims to make EVs more accessible, reducing Pakistan’s reliance on imported fuel and curbing environmental pollution. The move is a step forward in supporting sustainable transportation alternatives and contributing to a greener future.
Azam Nazeer Tarar, the Minister for Law, recently informed the Senate that the government had imported thirty electric buses from China. The government has stationed these buses at the Jinnah Convention Center in Islamabad, where state-of-the-art charging facilities are set up.
The reduction in charging fees and the introduction of electric buses form a key part of Pakistan’s strategy to encourage sustainable transportation. Additionally, the government plans to set up NADRA centers in every Union Council within the next two and a half years. This will further support the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and solidify the country’s commitment to cleaner, more efficient transportation.
