PSL Franchise Owner Urges Major Reforms to the League’s Financial Model

Lahore Qalandars CEO Atif Rana has called for sweeping structural reforms in the Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) financial model, highlighting the need for a more franchise-friendly approach to ensure the league’s long-term growth and sustainability. In an interview with a media outlet, Rana voiced concerns that, under the current system, franchises do not truly own the teams they represent.

“We’re merely custodians of the brand. If PSL wants to compete with leagues like the IPL, we need a no-fee, revenue-sharing model,” Rana stated, underscoring the limitations faced by team owners in the existing setup. He argued that the current model restricts franchises’ autonomy and financial incentives, making it difficult for them to invest in and develop their teams for the long haul.

Rana also stressed the importance of treating the league as a year-round brand, rather than just a seasonal tournament. He believes that a continuous engagement strategy would help build stronger fan bases and commercial opportunities, ultimately benefiting both the franchises and the league as a whole.

While acknowledging recent improvements under the leadership of PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, Rana insisted that deeper, more fundamental changes are required for the PSL to reach its full potential. He urged the Pakistan Cricket Board to adopt a model similar to other successful leagues, where franchises have greater ownership rights and share in the league’s revenues.
