Pakistan has launched its first drone-based surveillance system to combat industrial pollution, and it’s already catching violators red-handed.
Launched in Punjab by the Environment Department, the high-tech initiative uses advanced thermal drones to scan industrial zones for illegal emissions and environmental violations.
The system isn’t just for show — within days of going live, it uncovered three illegal pyrolysis plants in Lahore’s Mehmood Booti area and flagged four other factories for emitting harmful pollutants. Authorities have since seized hundreds of carbon-filled sacks and launched inquiries into the environmental officers who failed to act.
Imran Hamid Sheikh, Director General of the Environment Department, called it “a game changer.” He added:
We’re now e-mapping all brick kilns and industries. The footage from drones gives us hard evidence and a clear tool to monitor not only polluters but also our own officers’ performance.
The surveillance system promises to plug enforcement gaps that have allowed industrial pollution to go unchecked. Officials say the real-time aerial monitoring will add unprecedented transparency, helping hold both industries and regulatory agencies accountable.
It should also help address the issue of rising pollution levels in various cities of Punjab, which have been contributing to the overall air quality reduction and environmental hazards such as smog.
