IPL Umpire Makes Suspicious Out Decision Without Even an Appeal

ProSports.pkThe 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has already been rocked by allegations of match-fixing, and tonight’s incident during the match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians in Hyderabad is only going to strengthen those voices.

In a bizarre and confusing moment during the early stages of the IPL match, batter Ishan Kishan was given out in a way that has left fans scratching their heads.

The incident happened in the third over of Sunrisers’ innings when Deepak Chahar bowled a delivery that went down the leg side. The ball was safely collected by wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton and didn’t appear to touch either bat or pad. The umpire, Vinod Seshan, initially looked like he was about to signal a wide—but then suddenly raised his finger to give Kishan out.

Here’s where things got odd.

There didn’t seem to be a clear appeal from the fielding side. Usually, when a batter is given out caught behind, the bowler or wicketkeeper appeals. In this case, no one really did that—or if they did, it wasn’t visible on TV. Even the Mumbai Indians players looked confused when the decision came.

Kishan didn’t protest and didn’t review the decision using DRS, even though the technology likely would have shown that he wasn’t out. Instead, he simply walked off the field, leaving Sunrisers struggling at 9 for 2 in the 41st match in IPL 2025.

What Do the Rules Say?

According to cricket’s official rules, umpires can only give a batter out if the fielding team appeals. However, the same rule also allows a batter to walk off on their own if they believe they’re out—even without an appeal.

So, technically, nothing illegal happened. If any sort of appeal was made—even a subtle one—then the umpire’s decision stands. And since Kishan didn’t review it, there’s no way to reverse the call after he walked off.

But the situation has raised serious questions. Was there a real appeal? Did the umpire jump the gun? Why didn’t Kishan ask for a review?

Match-fixing claims in the IPL have become rampant in recent weeks, while the league has already issued an official warning to the teams as well. This incident is likely to inflame those voices once more, although there seems to be no malice in the incident.

Whether there is something more sinister in this or simply a case of misjudgment from everyone involved? Only time will tell.
