In a candid remark that is likely to spark fresh debate around the dissension in the Pakistan cricket team, former international Fawad Alam has raised valid concerns over Tayyab Tahir’s exclusion from Multan Sultans in PSL 2025, despite his status as a regular international.
Fawad made his comments to a local sports news outlet, questioning the glaring and continued absence of Tayyab Tahir from the Multan Sultans squad in PSL 10, despite his international pedigree. While he did not clarify his comments further, eagle-eyed viewers were quick to point out that this may be due to Rizwan’s displeasure over having no input in selection for the international team.
“Tayyab Tahir is playing regularly for Pakistan under the captaincy of M. Rizwan,” he noted, “but he is not playing for Multan Sultans. Let’s see who’s wrong,” Fawad Alam added.
While it is true that Tayyab Tahir has emerged as a preferred option for Pakistan in the ODI format in recent months, his status as a T20I player is limited. His limited game time with Multan Sultans could merely be due to the team already having specialized players for each role, with Tayyab being reserved for special occasions, or it could actually be more problematic, as Fawad Alam alluded to.
Mohammad Rizwan has not been shy about expressing his displeasure over having limited say in team selection under his captaincy, and this could be his way of making a point by keeping a player he has captained eleven times in ODI cricket away from his domestic team. After a terrible start, Multan Sultans seem to finally be regaining their confidence under Rizwan’s leadership, even without Tayyab Tahir.
Tayyab last represented Multan Sultans against Quetta Gladiators on March 12, 2024. In 6 matches for them, he has scored a total of 85 runs, which may present a truer picture of why he is not part of the playing XI.
Whether there is something behind the scenes that Fawad Alam knows about remains to be seen, but he has certainly brought the issue into the public spotlight.
