In a major step to ease traffic congestion in Rawalpindi, the Punjab government has decided to construct two more underpasses along Mall Road. The initiative is part of a broader plan to make the 26-kilometre road completely signal-free and improve traffic flow in the city.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz made an unannounced visit on Thursday to inspect ongoing development work on the GPO Underpass and the Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Flyover. Speaking to officials, she appreciated the quality of construction and emphasised that standards must not be compromised.
She also directed that trees be planted along both sides of the road for a greener and cleaner environment.
The chief minister was briefed by the Punjab Secretary of Communications and Works, who shared that these projects—being completed at a record pace—are part of the largest development effort in the city’s history.
According to officials, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Flyover starts from Khawaja Corporation and is being built at a cost of Rs. 2.3 billion. The underpass project, estimated at Rs. 4.38 billion, will ease traffic near key hospitals like AFIC and MH.
So far, 85% of the flyover and 60% of the underpass work has been completed. A dedicated pedestrian pathway has also been included in the underpass plan.
Once completed, the flyover will directly connect with the Motorway and Rawalpindi Ring Road, benefiting nearly 79,000 vehicles daily. The entire project is expected to be completed by October 31.

Rawalpindi is the most neglected city of punjab .only one I.e mall road is somewhat better but service is needed to be built along with the same. Nula lae road is necessary for Rawalpindi but not being materialised by any government.where as billions of rupees are being extended for Lahore.

There is a dire need to construct an interchange at Kachare Chowk to regulate traffic.
