In a major development, the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, has addressed the public for the first time since the announcement that the remaining matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10 will no longer be held in Pakistan. Instead, the final eight fixtures, originally set to be played in Rawalpindi, Multan, and Lahore, will now be staged in the United Arab Emirates.
The decision follows heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, which escalated earlier this week. The tipping point came when a drone crashed into the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium area, where the match between Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings was set to take place. The PCB believes the act was meant to disrupt the ongoing tournament deliberately.
Mohsin Naqvi issued a strong statement on the matter, saying:
The PCB has always stood by the position that politics and sports need to be kept apart. However, in view of the extremely irresponsible and dangerous Indian act of targeting the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, which was manifestly done to disrupt the ongoing Pakistan Super League X, the PCB has decided to shift the remaining matches to the UAE so that the domestic as well as foreign cricketers, who are our precious guests, can be saved from the possible reckless targeting by India.
“As a responsible organisation that has overcome adversities repeatedly and ensured that the game of cricket flourishes, it was important for us to ensure the mental well-being of all players participating in the HBL PSL.” Mohsin Naqvi said.
The PCB has also said it will release the updated schedule, including the new venues and match timings in the UAE, in the coming days.
This is not the first time the PSL has had to be played outside of Pakistan, but the circumstances this time are particularly tense. With foreign players already expressing concern over their safety and airspace closures affecting travel, the board has acted quickly to protect the integrity of the tournament.
Despite the disappointment for fans in Pakistan, the PCB is determined to keep the league going—hoping that cricket, even in difficult times, can still bring people together.
