Islamabad’s Major Highway is Getting an Additional Lane

Authorities in Islamabad have approved the addition of a third lane to the two-lane Srinagar Highway from Jinnah Square (Serena Interchange) to Murree Road, aiming to ease congestion and improve access.

The move comes as the Murree Road underpass nears completion, with formal inauguration set for May 22. Around 80% of the work is done, and final touches are underway, according to officials.

Once complete, the underpass will offer direct access to Srinagar Highway for traffic coming from the Murree side, eliminating the need to detour via Dhokri Chowk. The project is part of the Rs. 4.2 billion Jinnah Square development.

The CDA is using Rs. 250 million saved from the main project, along with Rs. 600 million in additional funds, to complete the underpass. A CDA officer said the board approved a 15% scope extension to allow the same contractor to handle the added work without a new tender.

Last week, CDA floated fresh tenders worth Rs. 1 billion for road widening and structural upgrades around Jinnah Square, including a new slip road connecting Globe Chowk to Srinagar Highway.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, during a visit, ordered the work be completed within May and called for landscaping around the site. CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa said three of four slip roads are already operational.
