The Punjab government is preparing to launch feasibility studies for major infrastructure upgrades in Rawalpindi, including underpasses at Chandani Chowk and Marrir Chowk, and a flyover on IJ Principal Road.
These projects are expected to be included in the Annual Development Program for the fiscal year 2025–26. A senior official from the Housing and Urban Development Department said the proposals were submitted by local lawmakers, including Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi from NA-56 and Danyal Chaudhry from NA-57.
The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has been tasked with preparing the feasibility and detailed designs. Each project has been tentatively allocated Rs. 40 million for initial studies.
The planned projects include:
“These projects are designed to create signal-free corridors and ease growing traffic congestion at key intersections in Rawalpindi,” said the official. “The Chandani and Marrir Chowk underpasses, in particular, will help reduce travel time, improve safety, and serve as alternative routes to relieve pressure on existing roads.”
He added that construction would begin after ongoing works on The Mall and Adiala Road are completed. Additionally, the government is considering a flyover or underpass at Kutcheri Chowk, with groundwork and feasibility studies already in planning.
The official emphasized that the projects would not only improve traffic flow but also contribute to environmental improvements and stimulate local economic activity.
