Massive Fine Announced for Over-Speeding Vehicles in Karachi

Starting June 1, Karachi’s traffic police will begin enforcing electronic challans (e-tickets) through cameras, with heavy penalties for violators, including a fine of up to Rs. 20,000 for over-speeding by heavy vehicles.

DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah announced the development while addressing the city’s growing traffic issues. He stated that traditional efforts and manpower—currently around 5,500 personnel—are not enough to manage Karachi’s complex traffic.

A major part of the new enforcement strategy includes strict measures for heavy vehicles. “The speed limit for large vehicles in Karachi is 30 km/h,” Shah emphasized, adding that any violation will result in fines reaching Rs. 20,000. The grace period ends in June, and after that, no excuses will be accepted.

He also noted that the installation of cameras will not only help enforce laws efficiently but also reduce the need for on-road officers issuing manual tickets. These officers can then be deployed to manage traffic flow more effectively.

In addition, the tracking system deadline also expires on June 1. Heavy vehicles without an active tracker connected to the traffic control system will be confiscated.

Shah stressed the importance of providing alternative parking solutions to prevent illegal parking. “People park where there’s no space because they have no other option,” he said.
