The Punjab government has approved a tenfold increase in traffic fines in a bid to improve road discipline across the province, following a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
The meeting focused on traffic management and safety, with key decisions made to curb violations. Under the new policy, criminal cases will be registered against parents or guardians of underage drivers. Strict legal action, including FIRs, will also be taken against one-wheeling and reckless driving.
CM Maryam Nawaz ordered the immediate removal of road obstructions, especially on major routes like Bedian Road. The government is also planning to redesign 372 traffic points in Punjab and 77 in Lahore to ease congestion.
To ensure transparency, all traffic challans will now require video or photo evidence. Hefty fines will be imposed on drivers using mobile phones behind the wheel, and action will be taken against vehicles with broken or non-functional headlights.
The meeting also approved the installation of digital roadside screens to warn commuters of traffic jams in advance.
A proposal to divide the traffic police into five specialized roles was also reviewed, along with plans to introduce new uniforms and modern patrol equipment. “There’s still no visible improvement. We must act now,” said CM Maryam Nawaz.

Always fines fines fines . Never assistance never provision in services
When Maryam Nawaz mother left this world . I think the angel fined her as well 😆
Instead of increasing fines . Invest in better Control
Trees and shade is no more so cars and vehicles are hot during summer
People should not be forced to commute during high summer days
Stop breaking roads for new pipes every few months
Allow better shades and decrease parking fee.
People are getting tired of endless commute
Almost 50 % car drivers are violating traffic laws.
90 % of bike riders do not respect traffic rules n regulations. Most bikes are not having head and back lights. Although it’s very dangerous but people don’t care. I suggest that people should be compelled to fix head n back lights in their bikes for their own safety.
Bike riders do not respect traffic rules. Violation of one way is their hobby. 90 % of them do not have ownership documents. The police should check their ownership documents it would reduce traffic accidents.
I think Punjab govt reduce shortfall by imposing heavy fines instead of reducing expenses
