Lahore’s Tollinton Market has been fully revamped under a comprehensive upgradation and rehabilitation project led by the Lahore Development Authority (LDA), aiming to modernize and clean up one of the city’s key commercial centers for poultry, birds, pets, and food items.
The Rs. 190 million project focused on addressing long-standing issues related to hygiene, infrastructure, and safety. As part of the upgrade, the market’s front elevation was redesigned with a cleaner, more uniform look, featuring standardized signage and color-coded shop designs to improve aesthetics and organization.
A complete waste disposal system was introduced, including separate bins for organic and inorganic waste along with garbage chutes to manage solid waste effectively.
Internal fiberglass shades were replaced to improve lighting and ventilation, while shop floors were reconstructed for better hygiene and durability.
The project also included the installation of handwashing stations, toilets, and cleaning facilities. Hanging electrical wires were removed, and the entire electricity supply system was upgraded through the Lahore Electric Supply Company.
Slaughtering of poultry has now been restricted to designated areas to prevent contamination.
Vendors were educated on hygiene and sanitation, while integrated pest control measures and the sealing of entry points were implemented. A management committee is also being formed to ensure long-term maintenance and oversight of the market.
