Govt to Impose Levy to Discourage Sale of Local, Imported Petrol Cars

The government is drafting a new policy aimed at promoting the production and sale of fuel-efficient vehicles in Pakistan. The policy includes a proposal to impose a levy on vehicles that consume high volumes of fuel, specifically targeting those powered by internal combustion engines.

Tiered Levy Based on Engine Power

According to the proposal, the levy will be applied in tiers, based on the power and efficiency of the vehicle’s engine. This tiered approach is intended to create a disincentive for the sale of fuel-intensive cars while encouraging manufacturers to shift toward more energy-efficient models.

Environmental and Economic Impact

If implemented, the policy could help reduce environmental pollution by limiting the number of high-emission vehicles on the road. Officials believe the initiative will also contribute to decreasing Pakistan’s dependence on imported oil, potentially easing pressure on the country’s trade deficit.

The policy framework is still under review, but authorities see it as a step toward a more sustainable transport sector and a cleaner urban environment.
