Qatar Suspends Air Traffic as Iran Threatens Retaliation for US Strikes

Qatar temporarily suspended all air traffic on Monday, heightening regional tensions after Iran threatened retaliation for recent US strikes on its nuclear facilities. The move comes amid growing fears of escalation following the US and Israel’s coordinated attacks on three Iranian nuclear sites.

Qatar’s foreign ministry announced the airspace closure as a “precautionary measure” in response to “developments in the region.” The ministry emphasized that authorities are closely monitoring the situation “in coordination with regional and international partners.”

The Gulf state, which sits just 190 kilometers south of Iran and hosts the US military’s largest regional base at Al Udeid, has become a focal point for diplomatic and security concerns. The US Embassy in Doha issued a warning to American citizens, urging them to shelter in place and avoid unnecessary movement. “Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend American citizens shelter in place until further notice,” the embassy stated on its website. British and Canadian embassies quickly echoed the US advisory, citing heightened security risks.

Iran’s armed forces issued a stark warning on Monday, vowing “serious, unpredictable consequences” for the US in response to its involvement in the strikes. The Iranian government has not specified the nature or timing of its planned retaliation, but the threat has prompted a wave of precautionary measures across the Gulf.

In neighboring Bahrain, which hosts the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, the American embassy announced a temporary shift to remote work for some staff. Bahraini authorities had already instructed most government employees to work from home, citing “regional circumstances.”

Despite the heightened alerts, Qatari officials sought to reassure the public. Foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari stated on X (formerly Twitter) that embassy warnings “do not necessarily reflect the existence of specific or credible threats.” He added, “Qatar continues to exert intensive diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region. The security situation in the state remains stable.”

The US State Department has also advised Americans worldwide to exercise increased caution due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. After Israel’s initial strikes on Iran on June 13, the US embassy in Qatar had already urged staff and citizens to limit non-essential travel, particularly to Al Udeid Air Base.

As of Monday evening, Qatar’s airspace remained closed, with authorities indicating that the suspension would be reviewed as the situation develops. No timeline has been given for the resumption of normal air traffic.

For now, the Gulf region remains on high alert, with diplomatic channels working overtime to prevent further escalation.
