India’s Asia Cup 2025 Participation Still Uncertain as Likely Dates are Revealed

The countdown to the 2025 Asia Cup has begun after the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) reportedly pencilled in the tournament for September.

According to veteran sports journalist Saleem Khaliq, the Asia Cup will likely take place between September 12 and 28 in the United Arab Emirates, but India’s participation remains unresolved amid a familiar mix of tense politics and logistical challenges.

While the ACC has pencilled in the window and provisional venue, the BCCI has yet to formally confirm that the Indian team will take part. Officials involved in planning say that despite speculation, India has not communicated any official withdrawal, nor has the ACC received any fresh objections in recent weeks.

Political tensions between Pakistan and India continue to complicate even international tournaments. In 2023, despite Pakistan being the designated host, the Asia Cup went ahead under a “hybrid model,” with India’s matches shifted to Sri Lanka. Since then, both boards have agreed in principle that future tournaments involving both teams will be played at neutral venues if necessary.

Despite the uncertainty, the BCCI has not officially endorsed any boycott. In fact, reports of India’s potential withdrawal earlier this year were swiftly denied by board officials. Yet confusion lingers, partly fueled by small but symbolic gestures. For instance, a recent promotional video by Sony highlighted only the captains of India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh—while Pakistan’s captain was conspicuously absent.

Despite these challenges, an India-Pakistan clash makes sense from a commercial point of view, raising hopes that the Asia Cup will go ahead. Pakistan and India Women’s Cricket teams have been placed in the same World Cup group with no objections from the BCCI. According to ACC officials, that tacit acceptance has given them hope the men’s Asia Cup will proceed with India in the draw.

For now, the ACC is proceeding as though India will play, with the UAE as the preferred host—offering familiar infrastructure and a politically neutral ground. With Mohsin Naqvi, the current PCB Chairman, leading the ACC, the pressure is on to finalize arrangements quickly to avoid another last-minute scramble.

The next few weeks will be crucial. As stakeholders await a formal commitment from the BCCI, cricket fans across Asia will be hoping that the region’s marquee rivalry remains on the pitch—and not stuck in the boardrooms.
