Pakistan’s selectors are poised to maintain their recent policy of giving youngsters a chance to prove their worth in the international arena as the national T20 side prepares to travel to Bangladesh later next month without three of its most prominent names.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, the squad announcement is expected this week, confirming that Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi will remain on the sidelines for another series, if not two. All three were also absent from Pakistan’s previous T20I series against Bangladesh in May, a move that is now set to continue into this tour.
While the absence of Pakistan’s marquee players will once again shift the spotlight onto the younger core, team management, including Mike Hesson, appears satisfied with the poise shown by the team during their 3-0 sweep of Bangladesh at home.
While Babar, Rizwan, and Shaheen are likely to miss out on selection, Pakistan is ready to recall Sufiyan Muqeem for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh. A training camp for the touring squad will begin on July 7 at Karachi’s National Bank Stadium, giving players nearly two weeks to prepare before departing for Dhaka on July 16.
The upcoming three-match series is scheduled to be played entirely at Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, with fixtures on July 20, 22, and 24. The matches will start at 6:00 PM local time (5:00 PM PST).
The decision to exclude senior players will inevitably fuel debate about their futures once more, but with the next generation steadily gaining experience, Pakistan’s selectors appear determined to test their bench strength once again ahead of the ACC Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup next year.
For fans, this tour will be another opportunity to see emerging faces stake their claim—and perhaps begin to fill the void left by three of Pakistan cricket’s modern pillars.
