This New Windows 11 Feature Should Help Save Hours of Battery Life

Microsoft has begun testing a new feature in Windows 11 designed to improve battery life on laptops. The new adaptive energy saver mode automatically adjusts power-saving settings based on system workload instead of relying solely on battery percentage.

Smarter Battery Management

Currently, Windows 11’s energy saver mode reduces power consumption by dimming the screen by 30%, disabling transparency effects, and halting background activity for certain apps. It also suspends non-critical downloads like Windows updates and temporarily limits synchronization for applications such as OneDrive, OneNote, and Phone Link.

With the new adaptive energy saver mode, Microsoft shifts away from fixed battery thresholds. The feature enables or disables energy saver automatically depending on device workload, without adjusting screen brightness. This approach is aimed at improving energy efficiency on laptops, tablets, and handhelds without disrupting the user experience.

Testing and Availability

According to the Windows Insider team, adaptive energy saver is an opt-in feature and is currently being tested in the Canary Channel of Windows 11. It is only available on battery-powered devices. Microsoft plans to roll it out more widely later this year.

While desktop PCs will not receive the adaptive version, Microsoft previously made the standard energy saver mode available to desktops, offering broader options for power conservation across all types of Windows 11 machines.
