India Champions Thrashed by South Africa Days After Pakistan Snub in WCL

Just days after pulling out of a highly anticipated World Championship of Legends (WCL) clash against Pakistan, the India Champions side was handed a humbling 88-run defeat by a ruthless South Africa unit.

On a grey, rain-hit afternoon at the County Ground, AB de Villiers led his side’s charge after being put into bat, with a blistering unbeaten 63 off 30 deliveries, leading South Africa Champions to a mammoth 208 for 6. The platform was laid by openers Hashim Amla (22) and Jacques Rudolph (24) before middle-order cameos from JJ Smuts (30 off 17) and Morne van Wyk (18 off 5) gave the innings a perfect finish.

India Champions, led by Yuvraj Singh, never looked in the contest during the chase. Apart from Stuart Binny’s unbeaten 37 off 39, no batter could withstand the probing lines of the South African attack. The entire team folded for 111 in 18.2 overs while chasing a revised total of 200, registering their first loss in their first official game.

The defeat was as comprehensive as they come, and added extra weight to the criticism surrounding India’s decision to forfeit their fixture against Pakistan Champions while still asking for shared points — a move that had already sparked debate about sportsmanship and the integrity of competition.

With not a single win thus far, India Champions are facing an early exit from this year’s WCL.

South Africa Champions, meanwhile, soared to the top of the WCL standings with two wins from two games. They next take on England Champions tomorrow before going head to head with Pakistan Champions on July 25.

India Champions, meanwhile, face growing pressure — both on and off the field. Having skipped the marquee showdown against Pakistan and now dismantled by the Proteas, they’ll need more than just star power to stay alive in the competition, with Australia up next.
