Pakistan Navy Gets a New Locally Made Gunboat

The Pakistan Navy has unveiled a new locally designed gunboat—PNS SAHIWAL—aimed at boosting the country’s maritime defense capabilities.

The vessel, which features advanced long-range, semi-automatic weaponry, was launched during a ceremony at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KS&EW).

PNS SAHIWAL is the product of the Pakistan Navy’s own Platform Design Wing (PDW) and is currently being built at KS&EW. The launch event was attended by top naval officials, including Vice Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Ovais Ahmed Bilgrami.

According to a statement from the Navy, the new gunboat will be outfitted with high-performance, long-range semi-automatic guns, significantly enhancing its effectiveness in a variety of maritime operations.

Admiral Bilgrami praised the teamwork between the PDW and KS&EW, highlighting the project as a milestone in the Navy’s ongoing efforts to develop indigenous defense technology. He also noted that the gunboat is designed to handle a wide range of maritime security tasks.

The Navy further announced that it is considering the production of additional vessels of this type, a move that would not only advance the indigenization initiative but also support the continued growth of Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works.
