Shocking Number of People Applied for Ajrak Number Plates

The Sindh Excise and Taxation (E&T) Department has received over 60,000 applications for Ajrak-themed motorcycle number plates in July alone, following a strict enforcement drive by the traffic police.

The sudden rush, however, is creating difficulties for the Motor Registration (MR) Wing. Officials say the department is facing manpower shortages, server load issues, and delays in printing and distribution due to the overwhelming demand.

Despite efforts to expand printing to Lahore and Haripur, the Karachi facility remains under pressure. In the midst of this, over 90,000 number plates for four-wheelers, printed since 2022, remain uncollected. Officials believe many owners are deliberately delaying collection, hoping the burden shifts to new buyers when vehicles are sold.

The new security-featured plates cost Rs. 1,850 for motorcycles and Rs. 2,450 for cars, while the MVR smart card is priced at Rs. 1,600. For those who paid earlier, the paid amount will be adjusted.

The E&T department has extended the deadline for obtaining the new plates to August 14. Further extension is under consideration due to the backlog and system pressure.

Over 2 million new plates—featuring security marks and Ajrak patterns—have been issued since April 2022. But with limited staff and a surge in demand, the department is urging vehicle owners to use online portals or visit centers at Boat Basin, Awami Markaz, Civic Centre, or the newly added counter at Karachi Press Club.
