Former Pakistani Cricket Agent Banned Over Corruption Charges

Player representation in Pakistan is once again under the microscope after Moghees Ahmed, a high-profile sports agent who represented many of Pakistan’s leading cricketers, was suspended by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) following his conviction on multiple corruption charges.

Moghees Ahmed, the head of the International Cricketers Association (ICA), was found guilty of breaching the ECB’s Anti-Corruption Code on four separate charges following an extensive investigation. The charges stemmed from allegations of corrupt conduct, particularly regarding an approach made to a professional county coach. The investigation, conducted by the Cricket Regulator, led to a subsequent hearing before an independent Anti-Corruption Tribunal, which ultimately found Ahmed guilty.

As a result of the tribunal’s ruling, the ECB has suspended Moghees Ahmed’s registration as a player agent, effective immediately, and banned him from any such activities for five years. March 26, 2025 will count as the starting date of his ban after which Ahmed will be allowed to return to the agenting scene—provided he completes a required education program on anti-corruption measures and demonstrates improved future conduct. The final 30 months of his five-year ban will be suspended, contingent on these conditions being met.

Moghees Ahmed’s ICA had become a dominant force in Pakistan cricket, managing the majority of the country’s centrally contracted players. Reports indicate that at one point, ICA represented over 80% of Pakistan’s current national team roster, including stars like Shadab Khan, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Wasim Jr., and emerging talents such as Abdullah Shafique and Saim Ayub. The agency had also established ties with former players like Misbah-ul-Haq, Wahab Riaz, and Mohammad Hafeez.

As the dust settles on this ongoing controversy, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will likely need to take a closer look at the current state of player representation in Pakistan. The rise of powerful agencies like ICA has created a new dynamic within the sport, and this latest scandal may force the PCB to impose tougher regulations. The fate of Moghees Ahmed, along with the growing influence of player agencies, will undoubtedly be a topic of intense debate in the coming months.

Ultimately, this situation could pave the way for significant changes in how player representation is handled in Pakistan, and possibly even set a precedent for other cricketing nations grappling with similar issues. The future of talent management in Pakistan’s cricketing ecosystem now hinges on the actions taken by the PCB in the wake of this unfolding scandal.
