NDMA Issues New Flood Alert

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of potential flooding in several regions following forecasts of heavy rainfall between September 1 and 3.

According to the authority, water levels in eastern rivers are expected to rise sharply due to anticipated rains and releases from upstream dams.

Currently, the Sutlej River is witnessing an unusually high flow of 253,068 cusecs, with projections indicating it may surge to 300,000 cusecs in the coming days.

At Jasarr, the Ravi River is flowing at a normal rate of 60,094 cusecs, but authorities caution that levels could climb to 150,000 cusecs due to additional rainfall and discharge from Thane Dam. Tributaries linked to the Ravi, including Nalah Ben, Basantar, and Dek, are also at risk of flooding.

Meanwhile, the Chenab River is recording a relatively low discharge of 94,728 cusecs at Marala. However, expected rainfall and water releases from dams in Jammu and Kashmir—such as Salal, Baglihar, and Dal Hasti—may cause a rapid rise, potentially leading to severe flooding. Tributaries like Jammu Tawi, Manwar Tawi, and Palkhu are also vulnerable.

The NDMA has cautioned that low-lying areas, riverbanks, and farmland could face inundation, embankment breaches, and crop losses. Local residents, farmers, and authorities have been urged to remain vigilant and adopt precautionary measures.

On the directives of the Prime Minister, the NDMA is closely supervising rescue and relief efforts. Its National Emergency Operations Center is operational round-the-clock, maintaining coordination with both civil and military agencies.

The public has been advised to relocate from riverbanks and flood-prone zones without delay. Citizens are encouraged to cooperate with evacuation efforts, avoid unnecessary travel to affected areas, and keep emergency kits with essential supplies and important documents ready.

In case of emergencies, residents should follow local administration guidance and immediately contact relief teams.

  • Funny isn’t it . NDMA is reduced from disaster management to just some random guy yelling “floods are coming” ..

Bigger question is what’s been done to counter it ? We’ve heard these for 70 years.
