Pakistan Captain Looks to Channel MS Dhoni’s Leadership at World Cup

Pakistan women’s captain Fatima Sana carries a heavy burden as she prepares to lead the side for the first time at an ODI World Cup, but the young all‑rounder is ready to embrace the challenge, drawing inspiration from former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The 23‑year‑old will lead Pakistan into a tournament where the team has historically struggled, managing only three wins across five previous editions. This time, however, Fatima Sana is determined to change the script despite the pressure.

“It is natural to feel a bit nervous when captaining in a big tournament like the World Cup, but I take inspiration from Mahendra Singh Dhoni,” Fatima Sana told foreign media. “I have watched his matches as India and CSK captain. His on‑field decision‑making, calmness, and the way he backs his players—there is so much to learn. When I became captain, I told myself I wanted to be like Dhoni. I also watched his interviews and learned a lot from them.”

Pakistan women’s cricket has never advanced beyond the group stage of a World Cup, but Fatima Sana insists the squad has the hunger and belief to reach new heights.

“This time, the jinx will definitely be broken because the young players know how important this tournament is for Pakistan women’s cricket,” she said. “We will not think about the past. My goal is to take the team to the semifinals.”

Her optimism is backed by recent form. Under her leadership, Pakistan went unbeaten in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2025, sealing their spot in the main event with confidence and momentum.

The first test of her team’s credentials will come against Bangladesh on October 2 in Colombo. With heavyweights like India, Australia, South Africa, England, and New Zealand also on the schedule, Fatima will need to channel her inner MS Dhoni as much as possible.

For Fatima Sana, this is more than just her first World Cup as captain,it’s an opportunity to emulate her role model’s calm, calculated leadership and write a new chapter in Pakistan women’s cricket.
